NZTF has been undertaking a programme of work termed ‘Targeted Harvest’ since 2022.
This was undertaken via Community Agreement with West Coast DOC, which was renewed for five years in 2025.
It has been a highly effective programme utilising motivated, experienced and vetted volunteer hunters to address problem areas of high female tahr populations in Westland scrub country. The need arose as it became evident tahr were adapting to helicopter control measures in open country, and spending more time under vegetation cover.
This is evidence of hunters donating their time for effective game animal management. There is strictly no trophy hunting allowed and all volunteer hunters understand that they are there to help with a job and make the best possible use of their time. Flights and ammunition costs are covered, and vouchers provided for food and fuel.
